SD cards could reach 128 TB of capacity soon

The current limit is 2 TB.

The SD Association has announced a new specification that will increase the capacity limit of SD cards up to 128 TB and offer higher transfer speeds, up to 985 MB per second. Currently, the largest capacity an SD card can have is 2 TB, and that specification was presented in 2009 but has not yet been reached. In 2016, SanDisk introduced a prototype 1-terabyte capacity card, but it is not yet for sale. At that time it was reported that such an increase in space was necessary to adapt to the implementation of 4K and VR.

However, making cards with these capabilities is very expensive, and that translates into the final price. A 512GB SanDisk card has gone from costing $ 800 to $ 300 today. Can you imagine how much would cost 128TB?

The new standard, called SD Express, will reach all types of cards, but the new capacity limit will correspond to a specific card model that will be called SD Ultra Capacity, or SDUC. Seeing the poor expansion of the cards of up to 2 TB, it is difficult to foresee when these new cards will arrive.

Perhaps the one that little by little will be working in increasingly larger resolutions and the arrival of this new standard will help companies start investing in these more spacious cards. Obviously, Nintendo Switch is not compatible with these new cards, but can you imagine bringing the entire catalogue of console games installed without space problems?? Surely 128 TB would fit the games that will go to the end of the console.
